iphone mail trash icon number swipe to delete

In the iPhone iOS Mail app, what does the number beneath the trash icon mean? I'm using the swipe to delete from the inbox summary page.

Where is the trash button in the new IOS 13.1.2 Update? It's insane I have to go through 3 steps to trash my super active email. The archive button on the bottom right is absolutely obnoxious and placed in such a way I keep accidentally archiving emails which drives me nuts. It seems like there is all this space, where is the damn trash button?
