Missing Photos from AirDrop

As of today, when I airdrop photos from my macbook to my iphone, they appear in my photos for a couple of seconds and then disappear - I cannot find them anywhere! They're not in recently deleted, they're not in any folders. I tried emailing photos to my phone as well, saved them and they also disappeared. I can airdrop successfully from my phone to my computer, though. And yes, I am logged into my apple id on both.

Any ideas on what else is going on?

iPhone 8, iOS 12.0.1

Check Settings > Photos. Might you have some iCloud housing method turned on? iCloud Photos? My Photo Stream?

Perhaps these methods are being used instead of AirDrop, and your iPhone has not yet had a chance to capture the photos from iCloud.
