Charging iPhone from a PC via USB

Seeing a lot of different opinions on the internet, this so I thought I’d post here.

Is it safe to charge my iPhone 7 directly from a PC‘s USB port, using an extra (genuine) lightning to USB cable that I possess.

Is it any different if the “PC“ is an iMac.

Some posts say it’s slower but not harmful. And a few say it actually can damage the battery.

The idea being that I can keep my original charger at home and carry just the above mentioned cable to work, making the charger last longer.

The daily plugging unplugging of the charger is not without wear and tear.

Thanks.

iPhone 7, iOS 12.0.1

It should be fine. Make sure your device is locked before you connect it if you've no desire to make the camera roll of the device visible to the computer. I try to charge my iPhone 6+ overnight, every night. It is very rare that I either forget or manage to drain the battery during the working day to the point where I need to top up before I get home.
