Macbook recognizes iphone, but not itunes. (I just want to sync music)

I have an early 2011 13" macbook pro and I'm trying to connect my iphone x to itunes to sync music but it doesnt recognize it. Everything is updated (both phone and os). Itunes sometimes will even ask me to unlock phone when connected, but when i do the iphone logo doesnt show or any syncing options (as if there is no phone connected).

iPhone X, iOS 12.0.1

Download the current 12.8 installer for iTunes from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.

Unlock your iOS device and connect it to USB.

Reinstall iTunes from the .dmg that you've downloaded.

During the installation it should announce that a further software update is required.

Install that and iTunes should see your devices.
