bluetooth calls speaker interference

I have an iPhone 7 model MN922X/A running iOS 12.0.1 (although I have had the problem below on at least one previous version of iOS).

Up until a few months ago, I was able to use the bluetooth handsfree capability in my car (2013 Suzuki Swift Sport) very successfully. However, then it stopped working properly. The problem:

1. The phone pairs successfully with the car

2. Phone calls can be placed and received; but

3. There is a very loud buzz/interference noise in the speakers that makes it impossible to understand what the person on the other end of the phone is saying. They sound like a very mad bumble-bee in a thick-sided jar!

4. The mechanic at my car dealership successfully paired his phone with the car, and the speakers worked fine. The speakers also work fine for the radio, and when I play audiobooks from my phone (physical connection, not via bluetooth).

I have tried:

1. Unpairing and re-pairing the phone and the car

2. Turning the phone off and on again

3. Switching between the speakers the car's system uses to play the phone audio.

Nothing has worked. I am now suspecting there is an incompatibility issue that has arisen as a result of an Apple iOS update. Please can someone help!

Hi Aviartrix74,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. From your post, I see you're encountering an issue with calls made when your iPhone is paired with your car stereo.

This is a great resource for general issues with issues like yours, titled If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod doesn't connect to or work in your car:

If you connect using Bluetooth

  1. Restart your device.
  2. Go to Settings > Bluetooth, and turn off Bluetooth. Wait for 5 seconds, then turn Bluetooth back on.
  3. Check your car stereo's user manual for how to pair with a Bluetooth device. Most cars require a phone setup on the car display.
  4. If you've connected multiple phones to your car stereo, try renaming your device: Go to Settings > General > About > Name, and type a new name. Then try connecting again.
  5. Update your device.
  6. Install any firmware updates for your car stereo.
  7. If you still can't connect, contact Apple Support.

It sounds like you've covered most of these steps already. One point to clarify, though; when you brought your car to the dealership, did they update your stereo firmware? If not, that would be an important next step and, depending on the make and model of the mechanic's phone, may explain why the speakers worked when he paired his device.

Is your car stereo manufacturer-installed, or is it a third-party CarPlay stereo?

You mentioned you're able to play audiobooks when you use a physical connection; are you able to make calls with a physical connection as well, or do you hear the same buzz sound?

I hope the information I've provided helps.

Take care.
