Read receipts not working

So I had my read receipts on with a specific person and they were working just fine then out of nowhere they stopped getting the notification that I read their messages even though it was still turned on. I have reset my phone, restarted it, toggled it on and off but nothing seems to be working. It works for everyone else except that person, how do I fix it?

So what finally worked for me is turning off read receipts, Sign out of iMessage (actually signing out your Apple ID), resetting the network settings, reboot, turn on iMessage (sign in again) and turn on read receipts.

After signing out and signing back in of iMessage/iCloud a million times - the only thing that worked for me was deleting the entire text thread and starting a new one 😒😭 I even backed up my phone right before so, thinking the problem was solved, I factory reset, got everything restored from the backup and the problem began again; only to ONE contact (I have read receipts on for everyone) but it was only not showing “read” to my girlfriend, who of course is my most frequent contact. Just deleted the thread AGAIN and the read receipts started working immediately. Very annoying, also very unfortunate to have to lose all those messages. I have a Mac and Apple Watch as well, they were showing as “read” in our convos on both of those devices, just not my phone for some reason.

Had the same thing happening to me and the only way I could solve it was by calling apple support and the lady on the phone told me to essentially back up my phone to iCloud or iTunes and then factory reset my phone after backing it up, then restore it to my backup and it worked ! iMessages show read again

so back up your iPhone

factory reset you’re iphone

restore iPhone from latest backup

read receipts should start working again

Funny that this thread should get resurrected today. I literally fixed this finally yesterday. I deleted the text thread with my wife on my mac (desktop) messages app. I started a new thread with her on the mac. We both then had to turn back on read receipts for each other. Suddenly, it's all working as expected. The weird thing is I didn't need to delete the thread on my phone. The history all remains there, but now read receipts work there too.

Useful thread and tried some of the suggestions but none worked, but ultimately I had to completely wipe my IOS Device (Tried my ipad first) setup as new, allow icloud to sync messages and contacts...it works - my wife started to get read receipts from me again, I then restored my ipad to that days backup and retained the read receipt capability. I then painfully repeated the process on iPhone and all worked.

Ipad pro v 3 12.9 / iphone XS Max 12.2.b1

ps i did try the reset of network settings before all this and no luck.

I call Apple support and a lot of people are having this issue after the update on iOS they said if restarting you device doesn’t work to just wait for the next update. It’s annoying it was working a few weeks ago but there’s a bug on the new update. Also anyone else notice that when you click the i icon at the top of the message and scroll through the images sent it glitches? They also said that if you have your device backed up you can do a factory reset and then MAYBE it’ll work again but it’ll delete everything that’s on your phone. So I’d say just wait for the next update.

I’ve done Everyone’s advices here but but one.

I did not deleted my chat/ messages history of me and my husband.

They said, (a couple of members here and...I even went to Apple store)

I was told to backup up my iMessage messages on iCloud so I will not lose anything and then delete my husbands info and then delete our chat/ or tread on iMessage. They said it worked out to so many but, I cannot delete our conversation that we had for years, even if you can still keep them on iCloud, you cannot put the messages back on your iMessage app which is (for me) is frustrating so I refrain from doing it.

still I’m not getting the “read” sign.

From Apple staff :

  1. backup your phone (or just your iMessage?)
  2. delete contact info (my husbands info)
  3. Delete (completely) your whole tread on iMessage (like everything)
  4. logout of Apple including iMessage (all your devices like computer, iPad etc.)
  5. turn off WiFi
  6. turn off iPhone
  7. wait till iPhone is completely off for a minute.
  8. turn on iPhone back
  9. Turn wifi on
  10. Sign in back to Apple.
  11. sign in back on iMessage
  12. send a message (iMessage from scratch of course), like putting husbands phone number.
  13. Send a test text
  14. put back to contact list.

it should be working they said.

I did not tried this method since (like I said) I can’t lose my chat/ tread of me and my husband that’s been there for years.

(I’m using X and husband is 8)

i hope this this works for you.

goodluck

Same problem. My girlfriend and I have read receipts on only for each other. I noticed I couldn’t tell when she read my messages. She just recently upgraded to 12.0.1, and has done everything you listed; reboot, hard reboot, toggle read receipts on and off. It’s on, but my texts show as delivered.

It JUST started when she downloaded 12.0.1, so it must be bug with the iOS and individual read receipts. I noticed if she turns on “full” read receipts for everyone (not just an individual text thread), it works.

Hopefully Apple will correct this issue.

My wife and daughter did not see my read receipts. I tried it all. Then, out of the blue, my daughter started seeing them. (iPhone 8 for her.) Then yesterday my wife saw ONE read receipt and then it stopped. (iPhone 7) This seems to suggest to me that it is the Apple servers. Another reason I think that is the problem is that yesterday, we all three got a message that the recipient was driving and would get back to you when they arrived at their destination. All at the same time. We were sitting watching a Christmas movie. None of us have DND turned on while driving.

IMO this shouldn't be marked as the solution. I believe OP (and at the very least myself) have read receipts on correctly. I have then on for everyone and the contact in question but he still doesn't get read receipts. Everyone of my other contacts gets them (from what I can tell). The contact that isn't working is my SO and we have a really long chat history so I wonder if that's part of it. I've tried every solution on here, signing out of iCloud on all my devices, disabling iMessage, rebooting the phone, etc. and nothing has worked. This also started for me roughly when I installed 12.0.1 (as another user said).

This is definitely a bug that Apple needs to fix.

I'm a developer so if anyone has any ideas I'm happy to dig into my chat.db. So far I don't see any message corruptions.

Tried everything and even called apple support but they couldn’t help me either. I found that the read receipts doesn’t work on my xs max but work on my iPad and iPhone 7. It’s annoying and it only started happening when I updated to the latest iOS. Might just wait till the next update and if that still doesn’t work I was suggested to reset completely which is something I’m hesitant to do.
