Spinning wheel of death while using Messages and Photos since downloading macOS Mojave

Since I downloaded macOS Mojave I have been experiencing the spinning wheel of death while using Messages and Photos. My macbook pro seems slower too. I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013). Any words of advice to solve this problem?

Hey David,

Thanks for getting back with us about the confusion. Hopefully, I can clear things up.

The information and resource above about testing in a test user account can help isolate the problem that's causing the MacBook to freeze. Even though the system only freezes when using Photos and Messages, and only after updating the system, there could be other apps that are running in the background conflicting with these two apps and preventing them from running at the performance they need to.

Creating a test user account and testing these apps can help isolate the issue, since the test user account will be running macOS Mojave without any other third-party apps that can interfere. You'll be able to test Photos and Messages out this way. Here's how to set up a test user account and test Photos and Messages using these apps: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

If you're still having the slow performance in the test user account, then you'll want to reinstall the macOS by using these steps: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery

Let us know if that clears things up for you, or if you have any trouble along the way.

Cheers.

Hey David Archard,
It sounds like you're experiencing some performance issues on your MacBook Pro, mainly with Messages and Photos. I'd like to help out.
First, take a look at the Activity Monitor when you start noticing these performance issues for an insight as to what might be causing the MacBook to freeze. Here's some more info about using Activity Monitor: See how apps affect Mac performance, battery runtime, temperature, and fan activity
Another way to help determine if third-party apps conflicting with the Photos and Messages app, or if it's the Photos or Messages software itself causing the issue, is by testing these apps in a test user account: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac
Keep us updated. Take care!
