Spotlight has stopped working consistently on my iMac (OSX 10.12). I usually summon it with a keyboard shortcut, it appears, but after I have typed a few characters it simply disappears and rarely allows me to finish a search. What can I do to fix this?

Unchecking Bookmarks & History solved the same problem for me, too. Thank you!!
Try going to System Preferences/Spotlight/Search Results and uncheck Bookmarks & History.

Spotlight crashes from API misuse
There is an "Apple recommended" answer in this other discussion: Re: Why does the spotlight window randomly close after typing a few specific characters? (yes, there are several discussions about that since Apple forums still do not have merging capabilities thus making users and Apple staff work harder.. sigh).
Hopefully, they will release a bug fix soon but do not hold your breath.
