Spotlight crashes from API misuse

The last couple of days I have had Spotlight crash on me more than 20 times and they all have the same Application Specific Information:

XPC API Misuse: Release of last reference on a suspended connection.

The top part in the crash log looks like this:

System Integrity Protection: enabled

Crashed Thread: 6 Dispatch queue: com.apple.root.default-qos

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL)

Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000001, 0x0000000000000000

Exception Note: EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY

Termination Signal: Illegal instruction: 4

Termination Reason: Namespace SIGNAL, Code 0x4

Terminating Process: exc handler [0]

Application Specific Information:

XPC API Misuse: Release of last reference on a suspended connection.

Application Specific Signatures:

API Misuse

There are also lots of lines like these ones in the system log:

förval13:43:42.669423 +0200SpotlightMacOS error: -67050
förval13:43:42.670207 +0200SpotlightMacOS error: -67062

Any idea what is going on? I have tried several search engines but have yet to find something that can help with this.

Cheers,

F

There must be 5 or 6 new threads in the last couple days pop up in the Sierra forum describing the same issue. Fugge says that Eric's suggestion to follow Linc Davis's procedure for re-indexing had solved it for him. Unfortunately, this did not work for me.

I believe this is solely an issue with Safari 12 update because turning off the "Bookmarks & History" option makes this problem go away.

If anyone is interested in inspecting my crash log, I've posted part of it in this other thread: Spotlight crashes after typing a few letters since Safari 12 update

Worth noting is that there are other tips for clearing the Spotlight cache where one is recommended to add the current system drive to Spotlight's list of non-indexed drive and then removing it. I tried that before posting and that did not solve my problem but the question Eric linked to takes a more through approach to the cache cleaning business and that did, indeed, sort out my problem.

I spoke up too soon and, unfortunately, marked Eric's suggestion as a solution. This is not the case and I do not know how to unmark a solution, which of course means that this will obviously fool people to believe that re-indexation is the remedy.

It is not.

What happens is that when you follow that advice (or others in order to clear the Spotlight index) Spotlight starts to reindex the drive. This is all very well and during this re-indexation does indeed Spotlight work flawlessly. However, once re-indexed is everything back to it's crashing self again. Nothing has changed and I still get the intermittent crashes when I enter text in Spotlight's search field.

Back to square one, I'm afraid, and still open to suggestions.

I also had this error on my system running Sierra 10.12.6 and the only recent change was the update to Safari 12.

Looking at the crash logs (In Console - User reports) certainly calls out the same things reported here as follows:

What this more or less tells me is that the Quicklook previewer is crashing when attempting to give you a preview of any weblink (in my case any *.webloc file).

What I had to do to fully fix this after trying all the normal things including rebuilding the spotlight index, trying safe mode, trying a new user, running disk check, checking the actual contents of the *.webloc files for corruption or malformed links, was to reinstall Sierra 10.12.6 by shutting down my system and holding COMMAND +R to "internet recovery" the OS on my machine.

Once the OS was reinstalled, full functionality was restored and I can now use spotlight as normal and include all items in the results with no further issues.

Are you absolutely sure?

As reported by others and myself, the problem only manifests itself after Spotlight has completed indexing the drive. Have you tested this again after indexing was completed?
