Calculator - Mac OS (percentage ERROR)

Hi

Since updating to Mojave 10.14, the % function does not work in the Calculator app (Mac OS) - nor using the % key on the keyboard.

It simply returns the result, "ERROR"

i.e. using the Calculator app and selecting the percentage "%" from it or on the keyboard, results in "ERROR" on the Calculator.

for example, to find 20% of 60, you would normally enter 60 x 20 % - as soon as you using the %, it gives ERROR

Calculator has always worked perfectly with all previous OS updates, until now.

I have found a fix for the issue.

Go into System Preferences and then Language & Region

Add English (US) as the primary language

Once you have English (US) as the primary language, restart the system and the calculator should be working with no errors when you press the percentage button.

For all the beta testers on here that couldn't replicate the issue, you can potentially do so by adding English (Australia) is the primary language. I suspect it might be an issue with that language setting and other ones other that the US version

Interestingly, I used the Apple Feedback facility well BEFORE the latest 10.14.1 release, so was disappointed that the 'bug' hasn't now been rectified from the original Mojave 10.14

Hopefully, the Beta testers will pick up on this and use their contacts at Apple to get the issue fixed.

Clearly, it seems that the issue is 'embedded' within MacOS itself - since there is no way to delete the 'faulty' calculator and do a new install.

All the suggestions of Safe start up and using different user accounts, simply don't work. It's within the OS itself.

Just seems like a waiting game, but I would hope that the fault is fixed in 10.14.2 ...... if indeed there are any plans to release such an update.

I actually believe that Apple must be unaware of the fault, even though all the testing should have identified it in the first place. Perhaps human error and priorities prevail .... I guess no one looked at the Calculator and focused more on Group FaceTime features instead.

Such a shame ... the Calculator ALWAYS worked prior to Mojave.

In the words of Pink Floyd, "Is there anyone out there" .... that can notify Apple through the right channels, in order to sort this.

Not sure of the relavence of repeating that you have 5 unaffected Macs .... though it appears you have other Calculator problems too.

This is a software issue affecting many Macs (though clearly not yours) and it needs to be addressed.

Happy for you having no issues, but the purpose of this post, was to highlight a MacOS fault - affecting many other users.

One user apparently has 75 Mac’s that are affected, so it isn’t just a few ‘rogue’ devices and must be software related in some way or other.

Apple makes the hardware and software, so it should be easy to rectify.

Let’s hope Beta testers can bring this to the attention of Apple 😀

As a Beta Tester, could you perhaps refer this matter to Apple using your access to the Software Developers.

Once they are aware, then I am sure that they will be able to fix the problems.

The problem would appear to be that end users, cannot readily feedback issues ... albeit there is a feedback facility.

Unfortunately, my feedback to apple was not addressed post 10.14, which is why the subsequent 10.14.1 is also affected.

I am sure Apple are extremely busy and can't possibly address all "feedback" matters raised, but equally, they are very likely to take on board comments from Beta Testers, such as your good self.

Could you please raise this with your Apple contact network, so that they are aware and have to opportunity to fix it.

Just because your 5 Macs don't have a problem, doesn't mean that there isn't an issue ... and clearly there is.

As a Beta Tester I would have thought you would be interested in supporting the development of the Apple Software, rather than inviting others to sort it themselves.

Perhaps this is one of the reasons Apple aren't aware, if it isn't being flagged by their Beta Testers.

I'm not having a personal attack, but just pointing out how it appears from an end user perspective ... i.e. Apple don't respond to feedback (as in, fix the issue) and Beta Testers know about the fault but don't feed it back through the appropriate channels ... because their own device isn't affected (so sod everyone else)

I've now sent two feedback alerts to Apple - an earlier one regarding 10.14 and more recently, the latest 10.14.1

Not sure if the feedback 'falls on deaf ears' due to the volume of feedback messages they must receive (including lots of criticism no doubt and unconstructive material) - which is why I appealed to Beta Testers, to use their direct connections with the Apple Software Developers, so at least the problem would be flagged with the appropriate teams and get fixed.

You can see the response from one Beta Tester in this thread - though I don't really see why a screen shot or the like should be necessary. Just because they personally don't have the issue, doesn't stop them reporting it and support the community.

Surely, a helpful Beta Tester can simply use their communications methodology and explain the issue many users are having (even if they are not personally affected by the bug) .... I thought that's what Beta Testing was all about ... giving developmental constructive feedback where appropriate, to facilitate the development of bug free software that Apple can be proud of.

I don't blame Apple, I just honestly believe that they have not been informed by their Beta Testers ..........

In the absence of any support, I've just signed up for the Beta Testing myself and will do my best to help get this resolved.

Seems like a case of 'do it yourself' 😁

Why would you expect other volunteers here to do it for you? This is a user-to-user community where we all try to do for ourselves while assisting others if possible. You were provided good advice and a valid reason why someone else here could not do it for you. Now that you've taken the initiative, just as others here have, you hopefully will contribute to getting the issue resolved.

I am also having this issue. It only happens on my brand new MacBook Pro 15inch 2018 i9 32GB 1TB machine running Mojave 10.14.

Interestingly if you use the calculator in the notification centre (the 3 dots and lines at the very top right of the top bar on Mac, or 2 finger swipe to the left in from off the right of the trackpad) the calculator works fine.

I have an old 2011 MBP that can't run Mojave and it works fine in all calculator modes.

Please fix asap apple as I use percentages regularly and it is really annoying and slowing down my PRO workflow đŸ˜©

Thanks in advance.

Perfect ... not sure how you discovered this in respect of changing the language settings, but brilliant all the same.

Mine was set as English (New Zealand) and having followed your excellent advice, is now set to English (UK) and has fixed the issue completely.

I wonder if Apple think that residents in both Australia and New Zealand don't work with percentages ... so it gives ERROR 😁

Yesterday, I spoke to Apple Support and they had exactly the same calculator ERROR issue on their device ... spookily, they were based here in Wellington, New Zealand! Reassuringly, he is looking into the fault and raising it with the MacOS developers - so at long last, the next release of Mojave, should see it fixed once and for all.

Hope this helps.
