Custom ringtones not working

I have an iPhone 8 and I recently had my custom ringtones stop working. They appear in settings>sound and haptics and even play as I select them. But, they do not work when I receive calls or texts... This may have started since the latest IOS update, not sure...

iPhone 8, iOS 12.0.1

I had this problem last year. It turned out the custom ringtones were purchased in iTunes years ago, and had become obsolete and replaced by newer versions. When I spent the small sum to update the ringtones, they worked.

My experience had been the same as yours - the old ringtones worked when explicitly sounded, but not in conjunction with associated contacts.
