Hello. I would like to switch to Apple’s email - I’ve been using Google’s gmail for ten years. Nervous about making the switch. Your thoughts re: Apple’s email vs Gmail most welcome - thank you! I assume I can transfer my Gmail content to Apple’s email. Thank you again.
You should certainly be able to download your Google data:

I'm not sure that you can upload it to an iCloud.com email, though.
I'd suggest you start using your iCloud.com email a bit to see how you like it before completely shutting down your Gmail. That will give you a chance to see how well you like it. Apple is certainly more trustworthy from a privacy perspective.
Note that tygb's instructions seem to be for how to use your Gmail address as your Apple ID.

And the Apple ID address is kept same as your gmail address , you can then sign in with Apple ID account see the steps in this article Set up iCloud on your Mac - Apple Support
And then set up apple mail application / configure with web mail server account see this article Add or remove email accounts in Mail on Mac - Apple Support
The port settings for gmail and iCloud are different , of course the gmail data can be archived but cannot be directly uploaded to iCloud server account , the imap account is just a medium to set up with web server .
