Contacts won’t sync on Apple Watch Series 4

I tried it all: reset sync preferences, de-activating Google contacts, de-activating iCoud contacts: nothing. Then I tried logging out of iCloud and deleting everything iCloud on my iPhone. When I logged in again, suddenly the contacts were showing on the watch. After the night, they disappeared again. I think Apple needs to fix this. Series 2 never had such a problem.
