ipod will not charge/making clicking sound

My iPod will not charge. When I plug it in, it is making a clicking sound. The

screen shows a brownish coloured X. What can I do?

The ticking sound suggests the hard drive cannot initialise properly and keeps restarting. See https://joshhighland.com/2006/03/29/fix-your-ipod-by-spanking-it/ for a possible if drastic workaround. Otherwise it may be time to consider replacing the iPod or its hard drive. See also If you see a red X icon on your iPod classic or iPod nano (5th generation or earlier) - Apple Support.
