Using an Apple monitor as a hub

I have an apple monitor that I'm trying to use an Apple monitor as a hub. I have an external hard drive plugged into the monitor (Thunderbolt 2 out/in) and the monitor into two USB C ports using aApple Thunderbolt 2 and power cord USB C adaptors) I don't see an image and my hard drive doesn't come up on my desktop.

Any thoughts on why is appreciated.
