touch pad-sometimes works,sometimes not..

I rely on touch for my key pad.

Sometimes it works, and sometimes not.

Sometimes it pops up a yellow line when I click it.

Sometimes it does nothing when I click it. Then I have to sign out of the page, and start over.

What am i doing wrong

MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)
