"This accessory may not be supported"

When I plug in my charging cable I sometimes get a message saying "This accessory may not be supported". It doesn't happen all of the time and the device will start to charge before I get the message. In addition, when I put it on an Apple approved wireless charger sometimes it won't charge. There is no visible damage to the charging port and the cable is from an AT&T store.

Hi, Joe!

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities. After reviewing your post I understand that you're having some trouble charging your iPhone 8. Specifically, when you connect the charging cable, you will sometimes receive an error that the accessory is not supported. Other times, the wireless charging just does not work. I rely on my iPhone, so I know how important it is to have it charged and ready to go. I'm happy to help!

Based on the information you've provided, I would start by going through the following steps, taken from the "If an alert says that your accessory isn't supported or certified" section of If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't charge - Apple Support :

These alerts can appear for a few reasons: Your iOS device might have a dirty or damaged charging port, your charging accessory is defective, damaged, or non Apple-certified, or your USB charger isn't designed to charge devices. Follow these steps:

  1. Remove any debris from the charging port on the bottom of your device.
  2. Restart your iOS device.
  3. Try a different USB cable or charger.
  4. Make sure that you have the latest version of iOS.
  5. Contact Apple Support to set up service.

I would also encourage you to review How to wirelessly charge your iPhone 8 or later - Apple Support , paying particular attention to the "Learn more" section which may help you understand circumstances where wireless charging may not work.

Cheers.
