Adjust frame/cropping in split screen

I'm making a video using the split screen effect. The default cropping lops off the left and right side of the screen, leaving the middle portion. Is it possible to adjust this cropping? I would like the left side of one clip and the right side of the other, so that everything important fits in the frame. When I go to adjust the cropping, it is locked into the aspect ratio, which is not what I want, because once the screen is split, that will not be the aspect ratio of each clip; is that clear?

I solved my own problem! Thought I'd post my solution here in case anyone else has this question. The way to do this is to crop the clips BEFORE you add them to the timeline, but selecting them in the "my media" portion of the screen, in the top left quadrant, and then going through the normal steps to crop. This allows you to crop in any way you want, with no locked aspect ratio. Then add the clips to the timeline and go from there.
