airdrop fail

I'm trying to send something via airdrop from my iPhone X to my MacBook Pro. I do this a lot and usually it works ok. However, I'm currently in a cafe working, rather than at home, and when I select airdrop on my phone, it shows literally everyone else in the cafe's devices, but not my MacBook. I have double checked and the settings in my phone AND my MacBook are both set to "contacts only" - I've tried toggling these on and off (by switching to "everyone" and back again, and by switching to "off" and back again) and it made no difference.

I've had this happen a few times before - always while set to "contacts only" - can anyone explain/help? It seems counter productive to have a "contacts only" option if.... it shows literally everyone *except* your contacts🤔🤔

iPhone X, iOS 11.4.1
