Screen will not lock on FaceTime calls

Hello, previous to updating to iOS 12 I was able to press the sleep/wake button during a FaceTime call (video or audio) to turn off my screen and camera but remain on the call. Now the call is automatically ended when hitting the sleep/wake button and even on FaceTime Audio calls bringing the phone to my ear does not turn off the screen. How can I turn off the screen without ending the call? Preferably, I’d like to be able to turn off my screen during FaceTime video and audio.

iPhone 6, iOS 9.2.1, Purchased from Apple Store

Before this update I could always turn off the screen! It may sound silly but I’m in a long distance relationship with a 7 h time difference so I will FaceTime my boyfriend when leaving work for example and we usually talk all evening until I fall asleep. So I used to be able to turn the screen off and still continue the call without light coming from the screen. It was also handy if you needed to shove the phone in a pocket or something for a moment and not have any buttons pressed.
