When I inadvertently signed to iCloud for my photos, most of them disappeared from my iPhone. How do I get them back?.

The usual reason that happens is that the photos were force-synced from a Mac to the phone via iTunes. Enabling iCloud Photo Library on the phone removes any force-synced photos, to avoid duplicates that would be caused when the same photos go from the Mac to the phone through the cloud.

Solved by turning off iCloud photos in iPhone settings and pressing "all photos" in the photo app on the iPhone.
If you weren't looking at "All Photos" before, where were you looking?
