I had a problem. I had iMac Late 2013, on Monday I bought iMac 2017 and was waiting how easy it will be to move everything from one computer to another.
But it wasn’t so easy. First I installed the same OS. After that I tried to do it as in tutorial — put them together and stared migration assistant. It stucked on searching for data or something like that. I canceled it in 30 minutes. Then I restarted the process and it started moving. But stucked in 1/3. I waited an hour, nothing happened. I canceled again. I have apple time capsule. So I decided to migrate with it. It was already evening, so I started the process and went to sleep. In the morning I saw a message from my antivirus program, that not everything was installed. I thought— ok, may be not all the applications. But when I opened a system, I didn’t see any work files or programs, nothing, only few pdf files in recent documents. The user also didn’t installed. So this morning I reinstalled is and erased the disk. Then I used time capsule (because I needed my old iMac for work), and downloaded everything except the applications. It took 8 hours (the speed was 21mb, while when I used 🖥—🖥, speed was 50mb).
That’s all. No I’m reinstalling all the apps
The best time to run Migration Assistant is when you first boot up the new Mac. It will boot into Setup Assistant and after a few screens of basic information it will prompt you to migrate and present instructions to connect your old Mac. If you use it after that then you need to launch it from your Utilities folder and connect the Macs. Be sure the name of your Home folder is the same on both machines or else if will create a separate account on your target Mac.
It can take a while and look like it's stuck. You can either wait it out, or try the migration again. It won't duplicate any files already migrated.
That message wasn’t full, I written more)
Well, if you're getting it sorted out and it's working stick with it. If not, you can always wipe the hard drive on the new Mac, reinstall the OS and then migrate while in setup assistant.
