My files won’t open or download on my mac

I have plenty of iCloud storage but when I try to open the file on my Mac from my desktop it acts as if it’s download but never does!! I have over 100 GB memory on iCloud and i freed up a bunch of space on Mac but still won’t download To use. What do I do?

iCloud files showing download button but won't download I am running around in circles, pulling my hair out on how to fix this issue. My files are all backed up on iCloud, and recently they have disappeared off my Mac. Not the key issue but random as I haven't removed them myself. ANYHOW. When I go to Finder > iCloud Drive and then my folders, they have the cloud then the arrow pointing down. When I click to download, nothing happens and the icon has a black screen with ".>" on it. Nothing happens. Nothing will download. I need these files for work, and to back up my MacBook Pro (files must be downloaded before moving to another location such as an external hard drive, as I have tried this allllllllll day!) Small cloud and arrow (ICloud???) Almost all my files have the small cloud and arrow beside them and I can't open any of them. I get a preview but no download. I know it is affiliated with the CLOUD but I have an urgent need to download and can't. Several Google responses simply say to double click because the file is in the cloud and the double click will open it-it doesn't! Anothe directs me to System Preferences but that refers to APPS. I'm talking FILES!

Macbook Pro Files Hello, I have a 2019 Macbook Pro and my files are constantly being thrown into the cloud and undownloaded from my computer. My storage isn't full, but I constantly have to click on the files and re download them to use them. This is a reoccurring issue with my mac and it is extremely frustrating. Please Help.

If you go to System Preferences/iCloud/iCloud Drive/Options, do you have Optimization turned on? If you have enough space on the Mac, turning it off, and see if that helps.
