Connecting MacBook Pro to a TV via HDMI

Having trouble connecting my new MacBook Pro to a TV using an HDMI cable. Using an Apple 3 port (HDMI, USB, C) adapter. TV doesn't 'see' the MacBook.

MacBook Pro, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6), 2018 MacBook with 4 Thunderbolt 3

Have you set the TV to the correct input?

Have you set the MacBook to display a resolution your TV can handle?
