desktop voiceover not communicating expanded and collapsed states

I am on a MacBook Air and lately I cannot heard the expanded or collapsed states of buttons with my VoiceOver. The weird part is that I can hear it correctly on my iPhone X VoiceOver and NVDA (PC screenreader). Anyone have any ideas if this is a known issue or if it is a setting I am missing? I have tried with Safari and Chrome, neither work. I have had others try with their Mac VOs for the same sites and they work correctly. At a bit of a loss of what's going on.
