Can't type the degree symbol.

I used to be able to type the degree symbol by hitting shift option 8, but that doesn't work anymore. When I do that there is no character typed at all. Is it possible I inadvertently changed some setting on my computer or could it be a physical problem?

Go to system preferences/keyboard/input sources and make sure that only US or ABC is on the list. In particular Unicode Hex should be removed if it is there.
