Error -6,753 updating firmware in AirPort Extreme

There's an AirPort Extreme in a room we haven't used for awhile, and I wanted to update the firmware to make it useful again.

The device is hardwired to our cable modem via ethernet.

When I tried to use the Airport Utility to update the firmware, I got error -6,753.

Repeatedly.

What is this error and how do I fix it?

Try the following, in order, until (hopefully) resolved. Try updating the firmware after each step:

If not already, temporarily connect your Mac to the AirPort base station via Ethernet.
Perform a "factory default" reset on the AIrPort base station.
Remove any older firmware version that may be stored on your Mac.
They would be located in the ~/Library/Application Support/Apple/AirPort/Firmware folder.
Verify that you have both read and write permissions on the follow folder:
- ~/Library/
- If not, change the permissions to allow read and write access, and then, be sure to select the "Apply to enclosed items" option.
Remove (or move) the AirPort Utility preferences plist file.
- Location: ~/Library/Preferences/
- Filename: com.apple.airport.airportutility.plist
