Error -6,753 updating firmware in AirPort Extreme

There's an AirPort Extreme in a room we haven't used for awhile, and I wanted to update the firmware to make it useful again.

The device is hardwired to our cable modem via ethernet.

When I tried to use the Airport Utility to update the firmware, I got error -6,753.

Repeatedly.

What is this error and how do I fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Try the following, in order, until (hopefully) resolved. Try updating the firmware after each step:

  1. If not already, temporarily connect your Mac to the AirPort base station via Ethernet.
  2. Perform a "factory default" reset on the AIrPort base station.
  3. Remove any older firmware version that may be stored on your Mac.

They would be located in the ~/Library/Application Support/Apple/AirPort/Firmware folder.

  4. Verify that you have both read and write permissions on the follow folder:
    • ~/Library/
    • If not, change the permissions to allow read and write access, and then, be sure to select the "Apply to enclosed items" option.
  5. Remove (or move) the AirPort Utility preferences plist file.
    • Location: ~/Library/Preferences/
    • Filename: com.apple.airport.airportutility.plist
