How do I remove pictures from the "Places" folder

I would like to remove all pictures from the Places folder. Apple says I can't delete the folder, so I would like to delete all the pictures (those with location tags) that are in the folder. The trash can is greyed out when I select a photo that is in the Places folder. I tried deleting them from the camera roll, but they stay in the Places folder. I tried an app (paid) to remove the location data, but all it did was create extra copies of the photos. I don't want pictures with location tags on my phone. Note, most of the pictures are ones people and family sent me.
