iPhone XR Portrait mode

Portrait mode for iPhone XR, When I went to take a portrait picture of my dog my iPhone would not recognize that I wanted a portrait picture. It said no person detected and took a normal picture how do I change that? Then when I tried with my toddler because she wasn’t looking it did the same thing.

From my understanding of a description that was provided in an earlier thread about this, because the XR uses only a single lens camera for Portrait mode, it seems it can only take a portrait photo of a person. Seems the software will only handle Portrait mode for a human face. If the child was not looking towards the camera, it is very possible it did not recognize that it was human face. Try again with a person looking at the camera to test.
