6 months free Apple Music
I purchased an iPhone 8 today and was told I would receive 6 months of Apple Music free. Even though I already had an active account.

You will have to sign up with Verizon for that deal, as they are making that offer. The subscription and the extended trial period is administrated by Verizon, not iTunes. You would not sign up in the Music app for a subscription.

About bundling Apple Music through mobile phone service providers - Apple Support
Because it is administrated differently, you will have to link you mobile number with you Apple ID, as detailed on the Support page.
The two subscriptions can co-exist, so you should cancel one of them:
“If you already subscribe to Apple Music, the next time you sign in to Apple Music with your Apple ID you’ll be directed to cancel your Apple Music subscription, either through Apple or through Verizon. If you want to take advantage of Verizon’s 6-month free trial of Apple Music, cancel your current subscription through Apple.”
If you choose to continue with the subscription after the trial period, then the price is the same through Verizon or Apple, but payed to a different company.
