Whatsapp won’t add contacts - they get added to iPhone contacts instead

My phone is a work phone and they block the link between iPhone and whatsapp contacts so they can’t be shows across the two. When that because an issue it was still fine as we were able to physically add the contacts into whatsapp and they would show up in there.

Without contacts in whatsapp I can’t send messages.

Please help!
