Superdrive will not burn DVD-R 1-16x discs

I have a G5 2.5 GHz PowerPC unit with 6.5 GB RAM and a SONY DVD RW DW-U21A superdrive. Since upgrading to OS 10.4.8 and iDVD 6.0.3, the unit will not burn TDK DVD-R 1-16x blank DVDs. This is true with iDVD, Toast Titanium, and the Finder. And, it is true when using blank discs from several different containers.

HOWEVER

1. TDK DVD-R 1-4x blank DVDs work perfectly!

2. The TDK DVD-R 1-16x blank DVDs work just fine with my G4 Dual 1 GHz machine euipped with a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104 and running OS 10.3.9.

Any ideas????

Another oddity is that no serial number is shown for the SONY DVD RW DW-U21A superdrive that came with the G5 from apple. At least it does not show in the About This Mac profiles.

This is a crock!!!

If the box of DVD says 1x-16x then you should be able to write to it.

If this is the way SONY devices work then I'll never buy another one. If this is the way that Apple hardware works then I'll just tell my friend - Apple/Microsoft, pick your poison!!
