iPhone screen brightness on restart

When I restart my iPhone X it opens with screen brightness at minimum. If I’m outdoors I cannot easily enter my pin etc! What’s the fix?

iPhone X, iOS 11.4.1, Happens on my wife’s phone as well

Hello makintracksusa,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities. I understand you'd like to adjust the screen brightness when you first start up your iPhone, and I have some information that may help.

If you have not already, it may help to enable automatic brightness adjustments in your settings as described in the excerpt from the article below. This will ensure your iPhone display adjusts to fit the ambient light after it starts up.

About brightness levels

iOS devices use an ambient light sensor to adjust brightness levels based on the light conditions around you. The sensor lowers brightness in dark locations and raises brightness in light locations. The auto-brightness feature is on by default.

When auto-brightness is on, you'll notice that your device's brightness slider moves according to changing light conditions.

In iOS 11 and later, you can turn auto-brightness on or off in Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations.

iPod touch doesn't support the auto-brightness feature.

Additionally, it's always a good idea to keep your iOS devices up to date. Have a look at the article below to update your iPhone X to ensure you have the latest bug fixes and security updates.

Happened to my iPhone Xs. After a power cycle and being outdoors, just couldn’t enter my passcode since the screen was completely dark. If fact, I actually thought the screen had died....Just when I got back home and into a dark room, I was able to log in and up the brightness. Like you, my auto brightness is disabled, and after a power cycle the brightness went all the way down to minimum. Since then I checked with several Apple geniuses, but no solution. The problem is further complicated since after a restart, the phone is not really in a lock state (neither Control Center nor Siri are available like in a “normal” lock screen state). In a “normal” lock screen one can ask Siri to increase the iPhone brightness, but as I mentioned above, Siri is not available after a power cycle or restart (tried both my iPad Pro and iPhone Xs on iOS 12.1), before one enters the Passcode. There should be a key combination to up the brightness after a power up or a reboot.

Thanks so much for your reply. While I've not been able to track down a solution (as you), I am nevertheless happy to see that I am not imagining the issue and you unfortunately share the issue with me. The only thing I keep in mind is that i do not knowingly restart or upgrade my iphone X (or my wife's) unless i am inside or near a darkened room!! I would think Apple would have a fix for this as i'm sure we're not the only two involved! Thanks

I appreciate your response and fully understand where your suggestions would help. However, because I work often outside and go frequently from hi to low light conditions, i have preferred to disable auto-brightness and keep screen brightness at maximum at all times except when needing to dim it at home i very low light conditions.

Thus, when it becomes necessary to re-boot the phone (as in the case of an ios upgrade), the phone goes from 100% brightness before the re-boot to 0% upon restarting. At that point, since it requires pin number after re-start, and if i'm outside in a bright atmosphere it's impossible to see the screen prompts.

My question is why the screen setting as set before the restart is lost?? This is often unanticipated and annoying...
