iCloud mail smtp issues

Ok, I know this may have been covered but I can't send mail out using my iCloud server. Server doctor shows as working. I can receive mail. The email sits in the outbox and I finally get an error message. I have deleted my iCloud acct from my Mac and logged back in with no success. The settings are set automatically so I can't even see what they are.

Here is the error message

Connections to the server “p43-smtp.mail.me.com” on the default ports timed out.

I have the same problem today. I talked to Apple Support about it. The agent put me on hold to get the latest on system status. When she eventually came back on the line she was able to confirm a problem occurred “this morning” and is being worked on by their engineers. Suspect she was referring to Pacific Time. She didn’t know the extent of the problem but I am experiencing problems with Calendar in macOS plus at least some parts of the web version of iCloud aren’t working. She couldn’t provide any idea of when they expected to have the problem fixed. She also mentioned that something similar happened last week.
