device not found

Back in August of this year, I purchased a AirPort Extreme from best buy. set it up with my time Warner modem model Arris MTA TG1672G. it was about the same time Spectrum took over time Warner. My internet has been awful ever since. Not sure if it's the time Warner modem or the AirPort Extreme. internet keeps going out, lights on cable modem are still on. tax rate goes anywhere from 702 mbps to 195 mbps. I am also getting the yellow triangle with the no device found message on the AirPort Extreme. (I do not have back to my Mac set up).I have the AirPort Extreme set in off (bridge mode) due to the fact I was getting double NAT warning before this. My ring video doorbell is all garbled, I can't understand what people are saying, I was all set to replace my Time Warner modem thinking that was it, but now after seeing the device not found message I am wondering if it it the AirPort Extreme. Can anyone offer me some insight as to what might be going on? I have rest the cable modem and the AirPort Extreme so many times and it's not helping. Please explain as simply as possible so I will understand. Thank you.

It is very important that you set IPv6 correctly.

If the computer is getting an IPv6 address from the Time Warner modem.. then things do get a bit complicated.

I am also getting the yellow triangle with the no device found message on the AirPort Extreme. (I do not have back to my Mac set up).

This is typically caused by IPv6 in the computer problems.. normally we recommend Extreme is set to a static IP with IPv6 set to link-local only.. same in the computer. With the current system that may not be valid.. but we need to actually see screenshots from the airport utility of your setup.

Please restart just the Extreme.. and then try and access it on the computer.. it should work for at least a few minutes after a restart. I need to see the details.. and since this is bridged nothing is public.

If you cannot get it to show up at all.. do a full factory reset.. power off.. hold in reset.. power on still holding in reset.. wait 10sec or until you see the front LED flash rapidly.

Reconfigure the Extreme with short names <16 characters.. no spaces and pure alphanumerics.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED NAMES. Those are from a different era. passwords same rules but can be longer..

It is really important in this setup to give it a static IP. But first run through the rest of the setup.. it should choose bridge automagically.. once finished click on the Extreme icon. Click Edit.. and go to the Internet tab.

Basically you select Connect Using.. and just change it over from DHCP to static and everything should stay the same.. make sure DNS servers includes the Arris router.. NOT your Internet DNS only.. that will cause problems.

There is more but start with that and see if you get any progress.

"do not include the local network.. please add 192.168.0.1 which should help the Airport to show up"

How do I do that? Could you please explain. Do I delete what is currently showing up for DNS servers?

You want the local DNS at the top of the list..

Simply click the + button on the bottom and add it..

There is no need to delete the current DNS servers.. but if they disappear it is fine.. add them back if you have issues.. but it should not be required. My network runs fine with just the local router showing as per my earlier screenshot.

Download 11.5 mbps to 70.4mbps.

Upload 5.9 mbps to 6.0 mbps.

If you paid for 60 or 70Mbps it should not go as low as 11.. but that could be ISP problem.

As long as your wireless is connected at 175Mbps you will easily get 70Mbps internet speed.. so faster connection will not get faster speed.

The way to get it faster is to connect to 5ghz.. are you connected to 2.4ghz or 5ghz??

If the computer connects to 2.4ghz and you cannot get it working on 5ghz then you need to change the name of the 5ghz wireless in the airport utility.. simply add 5g to your current name in wireless options.

Choose that name for your connection instead of the 2.4ghz name.. and see what the connection speed is like.

Ok.. I have a couple of simple changes to suggest.

1. On the Internet tab from your first screenshot.. top line where it says connect using: And you have selected DHCP.. which is default.. change that over to static as you can see from my screenshot.

Take note of this address.. even write a label and stick it on the Airport.. so you don't forget.. that is where it will be until you make a change.

2. On the same tab.. same first screenshot where you have DNS setup of 8.8.8.8 please change that to 192.168.0.1 ie this is the same as the router address. At the present time you have no local DNS.. this is likely irrelevant.. but I would still prefer you to make the change.

3. On the Internet tab there is a second item near the bottom.. Internet Options.

Click on that and change over to link-local only for IPv6.

4. On the computer go to the network preferences and set IPv6 to Link-Local only.

Do this on Ethernet as well if you use it.

5. On the next tab along. Make sure you have a local DNS .. an internet DNS like your ISP value is optional.

Also where it shows Search Domains.. it should be empty or have local. You do not want an ISP search domain.

Once you clean up those settings you should be pretty much OK.

If the airport extreme disappears from the airport utility still .. go to configure other in the top menu and type in the IP address directly.

If you still have poor wireless performance or internet.. the problems could exist elsewhere.. and your first job then is to plug a computer directly to the modem by ethernet and see how consistent the internet behaviour is. Use the modem router's wireless instead of the Extreme if you have no ethernet port.

Now that I have had time to be on the computer again, I see that I am still getting the yellow triangle with he no device connected message, although I am still able to connect to the internet. I am pasting the changes I made as per your suggestion so you can make sure I did it right. also, I have noticed my tx rate is only around 175. Do you have any other suggestions?

The last screenshot.. your DNS servers in the computer are both internet.. do not include the local network.. please add 192.168.0.1 which should help the Airport to show up.. if not I do have yet another trick to fix it.

I presume to get the screenshots of the airport settings you reboot the airport so it would show up? How long does that last for before it disappears again?

I have noticed my tx rate is only around 175. Do you have any other suggestions?

Is this number your wireless link speed or is this using Ookla speedtest (or similar) so it is internet speed?

I asked previously that you test by plugging by ethernet (wireless OFF) a computer directly to the modem router.. and do a speedtest to make sure you are measuring correctly. That is max speed your internet can work at.. it makes no difference if your connection in the local network is faster.. as that is rate determining step.

If the issue is wireless.. open the wireless so you know precisely what your link speed is.. (hold down option key while you click on the wireless icon).

You can get truly woeful speeds sometimes if it connects to 2.4ghz or in my case a router in a different location.

Sometimes you need to actually name the 5ghz wireless differently so you can force the computer to join the right wireless signal. I have done this so wireless should be connected to Asus5g.

When I do that I get much more acceptable speed.

So I have gone from 7Mbps to 878Mbps.. simply by choosing the correct wireless.

Please also notice how entirely and utterly useless the bar system is.. the apple wireless shows full bars on both.. Total nonsense!!

"I presume to get the screenshots of the airport settings you reboot the airport so it would show up? How long does that last for before it disappears again"

No, I do not have to reboot. the no device found message just pops up from time to time then goes away.

"Is this number your wireless link speed or is this using Ookla speedtest (or similar) so it is internet speed"

The tx rate I was referring to is when I hold down the option key and click on the wifi in the menu.

I have run speed test on Time Warner/Spectrum web site. My download speed there run from --

Download 11.5 mbps to 70.4mbps.

Upload 5.9 mbps to 6.0 mbps.
