Question Mark(s) in Dock After Update(s)

Greetings All,

I have just performed 2 updates to my MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) running Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.6. I was prompted by a notification to get the 2 following updates: "Security Update 2018-002" and "Safari 12.0.1". I installed the 2 updates from the App Store. After the updates and restart completed I noticed there are now question marks in the Dock where icons for Launchpad, Mission Control, and Downloads use to be. Placing the cursor over the question marks identifies them as Launchpad, Mission Control, and Downloads respectively. All 3 of these items still appear to function correctly; except selecting Downloads opens a full new window for the folder right away, not the more simple selection window it used to open first. Attached please see a picture of the computer showing the Dock with question marks.

Your thoughts, help, and explanations for this trouble are appreciated.

Thank you for reading and for your help!

Best regards,

Greetings,

Each of the 3 items with question mark icons do appear to function correctly, with the exception of what I wrote about the Downloads folder view before fully opening the folder.

I was able to select "Remove from Dock" for each of these question mark items and then re-add them to the Dock from their respective locations. It is good to have the Dock back to the way I'm used to it having been, but I do not understand how/why this issue occurred in the first place. Hopefully the updates have not created other issues or problems.

Another possibly related or unrelated thing I notice about the Folders I have available on the Dock; When I try to adjust the setting for "view contents as" for the Folders, "Grid" and "Automatic" appear to be the same. "Fan" and "List" make the expected changes to how these are viewed, but "Grid" and "Automatic" do not appear to be any different from each other. This may have been this way before the updates and Dock question marks issue, I do not remember.

Any and all thoughts are appreciated.

Thank you for your reply Kappy.

Best regards,
