Horrific boot time on external SSD after mojave-update

Hey everyone,

this problem has already been posted: Slow boot time after update to Mojave - External SSD. It has been marked as solved, so I reopen it.

After upgrading to Mojave on my external SSD ( SAMSUNG Portable SSD T5 connected over Thunderbolt USB-C to USB-C --> Time until loadscreen shows 2-5 minutes.

I tried almost everything like resetting SMC, new installation, reformatting etc. --> no solution. Even with the update to 10.14.1, problem still exists.

I hope this is going to be fixed soon, otherwise I see no other way than making a internal SSD-Upgrade through a Apple Certified Service Provider.

Maybe someone found a way for solving this problem?

kind regards

Short success 😟.

From another user:

Re: Slow boot time after update to Mojave - External SSD:

"I observed that after a power cut (holding 5 sec. the power button), then boot time is really fast. But that's not a solution.

Another user reported that if he starts his Mac shortly after the shutdown, then the boot is fast. But if the machine is turned off for more than 5 min. then boot is slow."

I had the same issue. I use my external SSD to test any new OS before upgrading my internal. After having tested Mojave and removing my external drive each time after about 3-4 tests the boot time has gone from 3 minutes to <1 minute. I did nothing except the disconnecting of the external drive several times. Not sure why this improved the boot time but mow I consider it acceptable.

Thanks for your answer!

Interesting! I tried it and now the the login-screen appears in about 1 minute. But that is not what i excpect from a SSD.

Looking forward for a fix from apple 🙂.
