Iphone x portrait mode

I've been using the iPhone 7 plus for a couple of years now. I build guitars and shoot my instruments in portrait mode all the time with no problem.

Until now.

I just purchased the Iphone Xr and went to shoot in portrait mode and it says "no person detected" Who's bright idea was this?

I'm really hoping this is a fixable situation. I rarely shoot people in portrait mode on my phone, It's always guitars and they look amazing.

Does apple think people only shoot photo's of people in portrait mode?

It just takes a regular photo and I'm very unhappy about this.

I want the portrait mode that I'm used to!

OK apple, what's the fix???

Thanks in advance to anyone who answers!

Well, you have a problem ...

As this article states (in the "Portrait" section):

"Portrait mode uses the dual cameras on your iPhone to create a depth-of-field effect."

The problem is the iPhone XR does not include dual cameras.

You need an iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max for dual cameras.

I am not "Apple", and I do not work for Apple. But I do know the fix.

The problem is that the word "portrait" is being used with two totally different meanings:

So the fix is simple: Do not set the Camera to "Portrait" unless there is a person in the photo. Simply rotate the camera to portrait mode and use "Photo" or something other than "Portrait" when not taking a photo of a person.

I just called apple because I was very unhappy to discover the same thing when I just upgraded to the iPhone XR. They said that they have gotten quite a few complaints about it already and that the engineers are trying to fix this and hopefully it will come out in an update soon but she recommended to add it into "feedback" on support.apple.com so that they can better see the number of people unhappy about this feature which will hopefully get it resolved quicker. I really hope this gets resolved quickly.
