Why does my phone still ring while on mute?

While my iPhone is set to the silent mode some callers will ring. Most notable members of my family that are exempt from do not disturb. I have had my phone for years and this only started happening within the last 6-8 months.

And no I have not changed any of my do not disturb settings.

Please do not reply with instructions on how to place my phone on silent.

If you have turned on the Emergency Bypass in the contact records of the people who are ringing through when the phone is muted, that's what's supposed to happen. Emergency bypass bypasses DND and the physical mute switch.

The issue is when I turn the switch on the side of the phone to show orange and switch the phone to silent mode (AKA mute). I always have my phone in this setting during work hours so it will not ring.

The only reason I mentioned the do not disturb component in my original post is that the only callers that ring are my wife and parents. The only people in my DND settings allowed to call me while on DND.
