Mouse keeps dropping connection to iMac

Magic Mouse constantly signals „low battery„ although installed with a fresh set. Simultaneously it loses connection, now several times per minute.

additionally i cannot access settings to check on Bluetooth devices- as it is impossible to navigate without a functioning mouse. Advice?

My magic mouse is not connecting to my imac... it does not show up in bluetooth but when it is plugged in and i turn the mouse off it shows "mouse off" but will not connect wirelessley. I had it on the charger turned on for a bit so the it should be charged.
