I found out the reason why I can't import my video files from the X-T3. The quality simply is too good for iPhotos to handle the import. I recorded in h265 with 400 Mbps and iPhotos can only handle the import up to 100 Mbps. If I film in 4k h265 100 Mbps LongGOP the import works.
I hope Apple updates the import options for iPhotos. The iPad Pro and library itself can handle the 400 Mbps without any issues. For example uploading the video file to my cloud server first by using my notebook or Android phone and then download it to the iPad works. But this is a cumbersome workflow which takes hours to complete and is not practicable on the go. If I could import my video files in full quality (haven't tested yet if I can import HLG recordings) via direct Type-C connection I would treat myself to some iCloud storage and would be fine with not having the option to use an external SSD.

I hope this helps to get you started.Import photos and videos
To import from your SD card or digital camera, follow these steps:
- Connect the adapter to your iOS device.
- Connect your digital camera to the adapter by USB or insert an SD card.
- Photos should automatically open to the Import tab. If it doesn't, open Photos and tap Import.
- Tap Import All to import your content, or tap specific items, then tap Import.
- When the import is complete, you might be asked to Keep or Delete the media on the camera or SD card.
You can import content only to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. You can't export content to an SD card or digital camera.
If you don’t see the import option
If you don't see the Import tab, follow these steps:
- Make sure that your digital camera is on and in the correct mode to export images.
- Disconnect the adapter, wait 30 seconds, then reconnect it.
- Unplug the digital camera or SD card, wait 30 seconds, then reconnect.
- Restart your iOS device and turn your camera off and back on.
- If one is available, test with a different digital camera or SD card. If you can import media with a different digital camera or SD card, there might be an issue with the data on the camera or SD card. Try to import the data to another device or computer, then use your digital camera to format—or reset—the SD card. Reformatting will erase all the images on the SD card. Check the manual for your digital camera for more help.
If you can’t import some content
Apple camera adapters can import multiple types of media files from your digital camera or SD card. If the format isn't compatible with iOS, you won’t be able to view them on your device, but can import them to your computer later.
Apple camera adapters can import only content that was captured by digital cameras. You might not be able to import content that was renamed, edited, or copied to the digital camera or SD card.
Because of the many complaints about iOS12 not being able to import videos from cameras anymore it is very likely a bug introduced with iOS12. I connected my Fujifilm X-T3 via Type-C on my new iPad Pro and can only import images. Same thing happening with the SD Card adapter I bought in the store. To be honest that really ****** me off. The only reason I bought the iPad Pro was for video and photo editing on the go and now it is just a next to useless brick.
PS. And because Apple doesn’t allow the usage of external SSD hard drives I can’t even test my Extreme Portable SSD to see if that one would work for the file import as a workaround.
Thank you for responding.
However, my issue only started after updating my iPad to IOS 12. I can import photos but not video clips as I could before updating to IOS 12. Apple seems to have changed something in IOS 12 that is causing the problem.
