Error backing up iphone with itunes

I cannot back up iPhone 7

Error message: "the iphone Cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred (error code 4000")

I have Windows 10, iphone 7 with latest version of ios 12.1 and iTunes.

I have rebooted both devices several times with the same result.

Any guidance or suggestions would be appreciated

iPhone 7, iOS 11.0.1

Hi jwe1,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. I see you're running into an unknown error when you try to back up your iPhone 7.

It looks like you may have already tried a few of the steps from the article If you see an error when you update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod . Have you tried the specific steps below yet? If not, give these a try and test again:

Plug directly into your computer

Plug your iOS device directly into your computer's USB port (not into an attached keyboard or USB hub).

Check your computer’s security software

You might need to update, change, or uninstall software that could be interfering with your computer's connection with iTunes.

While the error message seems specific to updating, there are some great additional steps to try here If your iTunes backup couldn't be completed or you can't restore from a backup that should help:

Try again after each step

  1. Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes.
  2. Connect your device to your computer with a USB cable, then select your device in iTunes. If your device doesn't appear in iTunes, you need to fix that issue before you can continue. Or, if you forgot your passcode or your device is disabled, learn what to do.
  3. Turn off both your computer and your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Then turn them on again.
  4. If you use a Mac, skip this step. If you use a Windows PC and iTunes won't respond or your backup never finishes, you might need to update, change, disable, or uninstall your security software.
  5. If you own more than one computer, try to make a backup on your other Mac or PC. Or, use iCloud to back up your device and restore from your iCloud backup.
  6. If you see an alert that says an error occurred, your backup is corrupt or incompatible, or there's not enough disk space, find your error message below to learn what to do next.
  7. Contact Apple Support.

I hope the information I've provided helps.

Kindest regards.
