Disk Utility, First Aid, exit code 8

2014 15" Macbook Pro. Running MAC OS Sierra 10.12.6

Ran First Aid from Disk Utility and received message about disk requiring repair, ending with exit code 8 and message to rerun First Aid in Recovery mode.

Ran First Aid in Recovery and receive exit code 0 (all good)

Reran First Aid in normal mode and still receiving message the original message and exit code 8.

So what do I do next?

I posted an answer, but internet here was "disturbed". Next try:

after your FirstAid tests, I second the Combo Update proposal by Eau Rouge.

when that does not solve it, I propose to restart in the recovery partition and "reset permissions".

when that does not solve it, in the recovery partition "reinstall macOS" this will leave your user data alone (but of course you have backups).

The problems I am experiencing are sporadic - some days no problems at all, other days: frequent beachballs, need to force reboot, very slow performance, fan running when not too much going on.

I was following a troubleshooting post and trying things sequentially:

reset SMC,

reset PRAM,

run first aid from disk utility,

run first aid from recovery mode.
