If the phone is plugged in to the USB port in the car that overrides the Bluetooth connection. See if there is a setting in the app to use the USB port. Or get a 3rd party USB power source that plugs into the power socket in the car.

I did that with my Prius, partly because the car's USB port only supplies 0.5 amps, not enough to run the phone and charge it at the same time. Just get a good quality one, not the cheapest one you can find. Belkin, Anker and InCase are good brands. Auto parts store and car wash models are not a good choice.
