Why does the lightning cable keep popping out of my AirPods case?

My AirPods case won’t charge, I’ve only had them for about a month or so and took them with me to the Dominican Republic. Once I got here, I found out they won’t charge. Every time I plug in the lightning cable it pops out. It doesn’t want to stay in the port. Even when I hold the wire to the case, it won’t charge. Has anyone had the same problem? I’d love to take them to the apple store but won’t be able to until the end of a December since I’ll be in Dominican until then.
