Bootcamp: not enough space (even though I have enough)

I am trying to use BCA to partition my mac air (2017 model, running mojave), but after the info page, I encounter the error:

"The startup disk does not have enough space to be partitioned." and

"You must have at least 39 GB of free space available." (occasionally it says 40 GB)

I have more than this (about 55- I also have an issue with my system consuming 95 GB of space, not sure if this is related)

I did some research, and checked if I have any local snapshots. I have never used time machine, and I checked anyway to confirm there are none. I'm a bit confused, any help would be appreciated!

I bought the laptop for school, but I am trying to run SolidWorks on it for a side project, so this isn't actually the primary purpose. You're right though, I would still want more than 55 GB. It sounds like I need to solve the issue with the system consuming most of the space first then? If I was able to, I would have more than 100GB free, though I have no idea if it would be contiguous.
