Speakers registers as headphones

So, I am trying to use some different apps as system wide equalisers. I managed to get this to work for a little while and then it stopped working.

Here's the problem, when I plug my speakers into the 3,5 mm stereo jack on my macbook pro, they register as "headphones". This was not the case at first when the input registered as "built-in input" and everything worked fine. So, now that I plug my speakers in, they register as "headphones" and this is for some reason not a valid output source in any of the applications I am trying to use to modify the sound system wide.

Any tips on resolving this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, gusgrave.

From what I understand, your speakers are being recognized as headphones rather than speakers. I would suggest seeing if these are still detected as headphones in a test user account: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac Also, what kind of cable are you using to connect your speakers with? Have you tried another? If possible, try another computer as well to see if the same behavior persists.

Keep us updated.

Cheers!

So, I solved the problem. Apparently, without access to the "microphone" the eqMac2.app will not work AT ALL. So trying to set an EQ filter in any source leads to a complete absence of sound.

This was step one, step to was the output source missing. So apparently, when having headphones plugged in to the outlet they become "Built-in output". So, without "headphones/speakers" plugged in, the "Built-in output" are the laptop speakers. After plugging in your headphones/speakers, this option in the output selection becomes your external "listening device".

So I have a MBP and it only has one 3,5 mm female outlet. I realise that this is likely supposed to be for headphones and not for speakers and I should use something else. However, the actual problem here is not really that my speakers are not recognised as speakers but rather that "headphones" are not getting updated and included as available outputs in apps.

I did plug my speakers in and the EQ app worked, as intended. I left my office for a while, came back and after unlocking the screen, the eqMac2 app no longer recognised the speakers. So the app should be able to apply EQ settings to headphones (as Boom3D does the exact same thing and as this is an advertised funciton) though the "headphones" (my speakers) does not show up as an alternative in the output menu, same thing happens in Soundflower.

So I was just looking for a quick workaround if one could just specify "headphones" as "speakers" quickly in any setting to solve this. I'll just keep looking for a solution, thank you for your input.
