Setting paper tray on a printer from an iPad

when I send an image to my HP Photosmart 6510 from my iPad it automatically assumes I want a photo quality image on smaller photo paper. There is no way to set the printer to A4 plain paper from the main try in the print dialog box. How do I fix this?

the HP has the latest driver installed and the iPad has iOS 11.4.1. In don’t want to update the iOS as I am fairly certain it will cause other issues and am not convinced it will make any difference to this issue.

the iPad is connected using Airprint.

To my knowledge, Airprint offers only basic/generic printing features. AirPrint is intended to provide basic printing support from a generic native printer driver - remember, iOS does not permit addition of manufacturers drivers for printers or anything else.

You may find that a third-party printing App (such as Printer Pro) might add or emulate some additional capabilies; another alternative might be to explore printing via an external print-server solution (e.g., Lantronix xPrintServer). A web-printing service, if your printer supports it, is likely to be your best bet.

Unfortunately, iOS is a fundamentally closed system. Unless capability can be added via an Apple approved App (or an external hardware solution), your options are very limited.

Just to reinforce what I said previously...

There is no option setting to change the paper tray this is the basic print dialog:-

...and this is the dialog I get when I hit the printer line:-

There are no further dialogs that adjust the settings.

iPads sense local printers and "install" them without frills so I can't "uninstall" and reinstall as you might on a mac. For some reason the iPad assumed I wanted to print from the photo tray only. The work around for this is to email the image to my imac and print from there - hardy 21st century tech!!!

Wow - so many responses! I'll answer the lot together...

babowa - haven't contacted them yet but see below

LotusPilot - I think its to do with the way I'm connected now, see below

babowa - I don't have the paper option showing - see below (nice picture)

BORg529 - nothing wrong with the printer - it works fine with the iMac and another linux machine (ex-windows)

I think the issue is that since Yosemite the AirPrint on this printer has not worked. Yosemite not only killed this connection but made another old Laserjet 4 redundant as it would not work with a parallel/USB connection. So I connected the printed to the iMac via cable. Recently I "upgraded" to High Sierra and fpund that the AirPrint starting working again - so the cable went. Now I know the iPad is separate from this cable, but somehow there has been a change and I don't know where. I did have to reinstall the printer on the iMac - perhaps that did it.

Thanks to all respondents.
