4th Gen iPad with Retina display not updating

Hi! Just pulled my 4th generation iPad with Retina display (is that the same thing as iPad 4?), out of a drawer to give to a friend, and I wanted to update it, first. It says it’s fully updated to 10.3.3, and won’t give me an option for anything more. My current iPad is updated to 12 something. Can anyone tell me why? Thanks!

Because the hardware doesn't support iOS 11 and later; it is still usable with iOS 10.3.3. In the future you can just google "iOS xx.x requirements" to find out what hardware that version of iOS will support.

Aha! That would explain it. My main problem is trying to set up the iPad with her Apple I.D. It won’t seem to take it, or perhaps the 6 digit confirmation code is flashing too fast for her to relay it back to me, accurately. When I do it with mine, it stays on the screen until I dismiss it. When it sends to her phone, it flashes on and off so quickly, she says she can’t be sure she’s getting it right. She’s halfway across the country, so I can’t do it, myself. I was thinking that It might be because the software wasn’t up to date, but I guess that’s off the table, now. Any ideas other than film her phone so we can pause on the flash?
