How do I get my new AOC monitor to display at 1440p connected to my iMac?

I have a 27 inch iMac (late 2009) running OS X El Capitan v 10.11.6 . The built in display is 1440p. I just bought an AOC Q2778VQE monitor that is supposed to display 1440p, but I cannot get it above 1080p. I am using an HDMI to Mini DisplayPort cable. How do I get the AOC monitor to display at 1440p? I have gone through the System Preferences and gotten no where.

Thank you

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

I’d suggest ditching the hdmi to displayport cable, unless it says it’s a high speed hdmi or supports 4k. Just displayport should do it. Don’t worry about no mac support being mentioned. Your monitor should work fine.. go to displays, under system preferences, and hold down the option key. Click on scaled, and you should see a whole list of display options.
